Subsurface - Drift Layer

Foam glass fused with cast glass

9 cm Dia x 6 cm H

Subsurface explores the visual language of geological core sampling through cast and foam glass.

Inspired by core samples extracted from the earth, the forms compress imagined landscapes into cylindrical sections where translucent colour, porous texture, and sediment-like bands suggest shifting terrain and submerged environments.

Foam glass introduces an element of unpredictability into the process. During firing, surfaces expand, collapse, and form porous structures that evoke volcanic rock, coral, or ash. These textures contrast with the dense clarity of cast glass, creating a tension between fragility and permanence.
